West Plains High School takes top honors in Interscholastic Contest
WEST PLAINS, Mo. – The team from West Plains High School took home top honors in the 27th annual Interscholastic Contest hosted by Missouri State University-West Plains Friday, April 13, at the Missouri State-West Plains campus.
An estimated 450 students from 21 area high schools in southwest and south-central Missouri and north-central Arkansas participated in the academic event. The competition tested students’ knowledge in a variety of subject areas ranging from agriculture, science and math to speech, history and English. Competition was held in three divisions based on school size, with first, second and third place winners announced in each division. First, second and third place winners overall also were named.
The West Plains team placed first in the overall competition, which gave its members ownership of the “traveling trophy” that is given to the overall first place winner every year. Second place and just two points behind West Plains was last year’s overall winner, Mtn. Home, Ark., High School. Third went to Plato High School.
West Plains also took first place in Division I competition, followed by Mtn. Home in second and Mountain Grove High School in third.
In Division II, first place went to Plato, which beat second place Houston High School and third place Willow Springs High School.
In Division III, Summersville High School took first place. Following just two points behind was second place Winona High School, and in third, just one point behind Winona, was Mammoth Spring, Ark., High School.
“We’re always pleased to have the best and brightest of our area high school students competing in the Interscholastic Contest,” said Dennis Lancaster, director of the university’s William and Virginia Darr Honors Program and coordinator of the event.
