WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Registration for 2014 spring semester classes at Missouri State University-West Plains is just a couple of weeks away, and area residents will find two new offerings on the schedule.
Mathematical Explorations (MTH 297) is a three-credit-hour course set for 5 to 5:50 p.m. Wednesdays that is recommended for secondary math education majors. The course, taught by Assistant Professor Dr. Taewan Park will cover basic topics in multivariable calculus, such as vector, matrix, operations with matrices, and the inverse of matrix and determinant of a matrix.
It also will cover proof in mathematics, including direct proof, proof by contradiction and proof by induction. In addition, students will discuss the relationship between physics and mathematics, Park said.
Students interested in this course should have received a C grade or better in College Algebra (MTH 135) or placed into Trigonometry (MTH 181) in aptitude tests, he said.
Physical and Digital Sculpting (CGP 197) is a three-credit-hour class set for 9 to 10:50 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays that will teach students how to create their own three-dimensional creature or character from scratch, according to per course art instructor Nate Ferree, who will teach this hands-on course in character modeling.
The course will cover small-scale physical modeling using polymer class, as well as virtual modeling using the computer program Mudbox. The class will highlight the unique qualities of each method and reveal similarities in both working processes, Ferree said.
While there are no prerequisites for the course, students are expected to be computer literate and ready to create using 3D sculpting software, he added.
Ferree is an accomplished artist who exhibits locally and regionally. His ongoing project, Cyborg Clayworks, which was featured at the West Plains Civic Center in January, involves large- and small-scale ceramic robot sculptures.
Current and readmitted students can begin registering for 2014 spring semester classes during early registration Nov. 19-22. Registration times are based on number of hours completed. Area residents, as well as current students who did not sign up during early registration, can begin registering for classes Nov. 23 during regular registration, which will continue through Jan. 12.
