THREE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS took top honors at the third annual Student Congress of Public Affairs contest hosted March 29 by Missouri State University-West Plains and the Student Speech and Theatre Association (SSTAM), a student organization. Josh Campbell, West Plains High School, took home the trophy for ethical leadership; Grace Phillips, Salem (Ark.) High School, took home the trophy for community engagement; and Adam Hand, Bakersfield High School, took home the trophy for cultural competency. The event simulates the legislative process by allowing students to compete in events such as committee work, floor debate, parliamentary procedure and bill writing. It’s aimed at introducing new and inexperienced students to the concepts of debate, according to organizer Dr. Gary Phillips, associate professor of communication. SSTAM member Tori Bates, Alton, also assisted with the event. (Photo provided)
