DAKOTA BATES, right, Alton, received the Newman Civic Fellows Award from Campus Compact for his efforts in leading the Missouri State University-West Plains student body in the Operation 50K initiative. The award honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. As this year’s Student Government Association (SGA) president, Bates worked with university leaders to organize and coordinate student efforts in providing over 50,000 of community service in honor of the university’s 50th anniversary. The initiative began following commencement in May 2013 with the goal of reaching 50,000 hours by commencement this year. The goal was reached earlier this month, well before the deadline, thanks in large part to hours recorded by students. Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of education. As the only national higher education association dedicated solely to campus-based civic engagement, Campus Compact promotes public and community service that develops students’ citizenship skills, helps campuses forge effective community partnerships, and provides resources and training for faculty seeking to integrate civic and community-based learning into the curriculum.
