SEVERAL STUDENTS, FACULTY and staff at Missouri State University-West Plains gathered Feb. 24 at the Student Recreation Center on Trish Knight Street to pay tribute to Black History Month with a march from the center to the West Plains Civic Center. The march was one of several events that took place on campus during February that brought attention to the contributions of African Americans and how those contributions can inspire others to greatness, organizers said. Following the march, the group joined other students, faculty and staff at the civic center theater to watch the critically-acclaimed film “Straight Outta Compton.” Released last year, film tells the story of the hip-hop group N.W.A., which rose out of the racial tumult of Los Angeles in the mid 1980s to revolutionize the global consumption of hip-hop and popular culture.
