WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Missouri State University-West Plains’ annual film series will conclude at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, with the showing of the Academy Award-winning documentary film “Woodstock: Three Days of Peace and Music”at the West Plains Civic Center theater.
The free showing is part of this year’s “Flashback Film Series: The 60s” sponsored by the University/Community Programs (U/CP) Department.
Released in 1970, the film takes an intimate look at the legendary 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Festival in Bethel, N.Y., and features live footage of the event, from preparation through cleanup. It includes historic access to insiders; concert footage of such performers as The Who, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix; and the negative and positive aspects of the event.
“The film portrays the 1960s hippie counterculture and the era’s music of youth and rebellion, with close-up footage of the musicians and bands that led the revolt,” said U/CP Theater and Events Coordinator Deborah DeWitt. “It is a study in how the music told the story of the times.”
The film, directed by Michael Wadleigh, is rated R.
DeWitt, who will facilitate a discussion session following the film, said she is looking for someone who attended Woodstock to join her during the discussion session as a co-facilitator. Those interested can contact her at the U/CP Department office, 417-255-7966.
