No surprises in 1st round of NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament

WEST PLAINS, Mo. – The top eight teams in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Women’s National Volleyball Championship Tournament all won their first-round matches Thursday, Nov. 15, at the West Plains Civic Center in West Plains, Mo., and will advance to second-round action in the championship bracket.

No. 1 seed College of Southern Idaho (30-1), Twin Falls, got a scare from tournament first timer No. 16 seed Faulkner State Community College (27-8), Bay Minette, Ala.  After dropping the first game 20-25, CSI took the next three 25-22, 25-16, 25-19.

The closest match of the day was the pairing of No. 8 Hillsborough Community College ( 28-12), Tampa, Fla., and No. 9 Missouri State University-West Plains (25-10).  After taking the first game 25-15, the Hawks dropped the next two to the Grizzlies 18-25 and 29-31 before finally finishing off the match with 25-17 and 15-8 wins in the final two games.

It took No. 5 Tyler Junior College (30-5), Tyler, Texas, four games to best No. 12 Redlands Community College (23-10), El Reno, Okla., 25-15, 25-8, 21-25, 30-28.

In the remaining matches, No. 2 Western Nebraska Community College (38-2), Scottsbluff, downed No. 15 Wallace State Community College (33-7), Hanceville, Ala., 25-19, 25-19, 25-11; No. 3 Iowa Western Community College (44-2), Council Bluffs, defeated No. 14 Temple College (22-18), Temple, Texas, 25-18, 25-18, 25-18; No. 4 San Jacinto College-Central (33-2), Pasadena, Texas, beat No. 13 Casper College (23-18), Casper, Wyo., 25-13, 25-13, 25-19; No. 6 College of Central Florida (34-6), Ocala, downed No. 11 Western Texas College (26-9) 25-12, 25-21, 25-14; and No. 7 North Idaho College (23-5), Coeur d’Alene, beat No. 10 Hutchinson Community College (27-9), Hutchinson, Kan., 25-20, 25-15, 25-19.

The championship bracket’s second-round matches will pair Iowa Western against College of Central Florida and Western Nebraska against North Idaho at 5:30 p.m. today, and CSI against Hillsborough and San Jacinto against Tyler at 7:30 p.m.

The consolation bracket’s second-round matches will take place Friday morning, Nov. 16, and feature Temple against Western Texas and Hutchinson against Wallace State at 10 a.m. and Faulkner State against Missouri State-West Plains and Redlands against Casper at noon.

The tournament will continue through Saturday, Nov. 17, with the championship match set for 6:30 p.m.
