WPHS wins 28th annual Interscholastic Contest

WEST PLAINS, Mo. – The team from West Plains High School took home top honors in the 28th annual Interscholastic Contest hosted by Missouri State University-West Plains Friday, April 5, at the Missouri State-West Plains campus.

An estimated 489 students from 19 area high schools in southwest and south-central Missouri and north-central Arkansas participated in the academic event.  The competition tested students’ knowledge in a variety of subject areas ranging from agriculture, science and math to speech, history and English.  Competition was held in three divisions based on school size, with first, second and third place winners announced in each division.  First, second and third place winners overall also were named.

The West Plains team placed first in the overall competition for the second year in a row, which allowed its members to keep the “traveling trophy” that is given to the overall first place winner every year.  Second place went to Mtn. Home (Ark.) High School and third to Alton High School.

West Plains also took first place in Division I competition, followed by Mtn. Home in second and Willow Springs High School in third.

In Division II, first place went to Alton, which beat last year’s Division II winner Plato High school, which placed second this year, and third place Mtn. View-Birch Tree Liberty High School.

In Division III, Summersville High School took first place for the second year in a row.  Second place went to Koshkonong High School and third to Mammoth Spring (Ark.) High School.  The battle in Division III proved to be the closest as only four points separated first from third place, organizers pointed out.

“The Interscholastic Contest is always a highlight of the academic year for us, as we get to host some of the best students around on our campus,” said Dennis Lancaster, director of the university’s William and Virginia Darr Honors Program and coordinator of the event.
