What services does your department provide students?
The Grizzly Tutoring Math and Science lab provides students with tutoring, as well as answers to questions on many different topics. This past semester we have branched into a study group area that allows science classes, like biomedical science, to have a place where students can work together in groups to collaboratively learn the material in the course. Almost every day there is a group using this new facility. Students come in the lab seeking a quiet place to focus on math and science, as well as get help in these subjects. We also tutor Computers for Learning, economics, accounting and any subject that uses math.
What do you find most rewarding about working at Missouri State-West Plains?
I find the students’ responses to learning to be the most rewarding part of the job. When a student understands something new and sees the light, it is tremendous. Often students will come in and tell us of their successes on tests, and when this happens they are so excited for a place where they can get the help they need. It is very rewarding to be able to meet the students’ needs in this area.
What advice would you give a student about succeeding academically in college?
Take advantage of the instructors’ offers of help. Be sure to understand everything. Seek understanding and not simply the correct answer, as understanding builds the possibility of applying learning to other topics and ideas, and not simply a regurgitation of facts. The tutoring center is a good place to get that understanding and is often used by students to increase their chances of success.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy playing with my grandchildren, reading, doing crafts, playing music and singing, teaching the Bible and most of all, traveling to Africa. I also enjoy experimenting with different ways to teach math and growing my skills in this area.
