Ana Estrella-Riollano, assistant professor of biology and biomedical sciences at Missouri State University-West Plains, received the Faculty Excellence in Public Affairs Award during the Missouri State University Board of Governors meeting Thursday, May 17, in Springfield.
The award is given to a full-time faculty member who excels at carrying out the university’s public affairs mission.
Estrella-Riollano’s public affairs contributions are cross-disciplinary and international in scope. She developed service learning projects and short-term study away experiences affecting the ecosystem of Puerto Rico, as well as leatherback sea turtles and tropical ecology in Costa Rica.
University officials pointed out her dedication to service creates a more inclusive campus and community and has inspired others to celebrate diversity and lead by example for meaningful change.
She received a plaque and $1,500 grant to be used toward travel and/or research related to her public affairs work.
