Assistant Professor of Child and Family Development
Bachelor of Education, Missouri State University
Master of Education, Missouri State University
What made you decide to specialize in Child and Family Development?
Various topics drew my interest, and it’s a lifelong field of study. My field is childhood-through-adulthood human development.
What was your favorite course in college and why?
Probably due to my instructor, educational philosophy. The instructor made it very interesting. When I took classes here at West Plains, Carol Silvey made Western Civilization come to life. She had the passion to make it interesting, and she was a wonderful mentor as well.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
Sharing knowledge and experience that people can benefit from and apply to their lives.
What advice would you give current or prospective students?
Learn to balance school with work and family, and remember you still have to take care of yourself. Also get involved with the campus and the community.
What would you say to a student interested in pursuing a career in Child and Family Development?
You have to like people. You can’t just do the job digitally – you have to engage with real-life people.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I like to sew. I enjoy reading, boating and visiting my grandkids, which means I get to travel, which I also enjoy.
