Work on the new amphitheater at Missouri State University-West Plains is underway.
Crews with DeWitt & Associates, Inc., in Springfield began preparing the site for construction Friday, March 15, just west of the Smith-London Centennial Bell Tower.
University officials said the $585,000 project should be completed by the end of the summer.
“We are excited about the opportunities the amphitheater brings to our campus by providing an outdoor venue for student activities and events, as well as the opportunity for the community to use the venue,” Chancellor Shirley Lawler said.
Once completed, the 850-seat amphitheater will provide the university and the greater West Plains community an outdoor venue for such activities as spectator events, concerts, rallies, films and theatrical performances.
Utilizing the natural terrain of the area, seating will face a theatrical-style stage, providing an enjoyable atmosphere and environment in which to view entertainment, university officials have said.
In addition to university use, the amphitheater will be available to reserve for activities and events sponsored by various community and private organizations and the general public. Reservation requests will need to be made through the office of business and support services.
Construction costs are being covered by a combination of private donations, university funds and a $202,137 matching grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Land and Water Conservation Fund.
“This project ties the campus together from Lybyer Technology Center to Kellett Hall and will complete the building needs for the campus for some time to come,” Lawler said.
