“Coming back to college after taking a few years off was intimidating, but everyone has been so welcoming”

Academic Program: Associate of Applied Science in Child and Family Development

Hometown: Thayer, MO

Why did you choose to attend Missouri State-West Plains?

I choose to attend Missouri State-West Plains because it is close to home, and it offers a variety of classes that I’m interested in.

How would you describe your experience here?

I have really enjoyed my experience here. All of the teachers and advisors have been so helpful and encouraging. Coming back to college after taking a few years off was intimidating, but everyone has been so welcoming.

What has been your favorite thing about Missouri State-West Plains?

My favorite thing about Missouri State-West Plains is the Missouri State Outreach program. I am so excited to continue my education on the campus of MSU-WP. I think it is amazing that I can obtain an associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree all at the same place!

What has been your favorite course?

My favorite course I have taken would be Internship/Planning and Implementing Curriculum because I got to spend so much time around children, and I also got to do a lot of fun activities with them.

How have faculty and staff helped you during your time at Missouri State-West Plains?

The faculty and staff have helped me so much with planning what classes I need to take to finish my associate degree. They have also encouraged me to look into pursuing a master’s degree. I’ve also received a ton of help from my teachers and from the financial aid office.

How did you choose your major?

I talked with my advisor about the different options I had after finishing my general studies degree and decided that child and family development fit my interests the best.

What have you learned from the Child and Family Development Department that will help you succeed in your education, career or life?

I have learned so much about children and how they act at different ages and why they act certain ways. I’ve also learned how to deal with children in large groups and one-on-one through taking child and family development classes.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduating from MSU-WP, I plan to work towards a bachelor’s degree in child and family Development. I will stay on the MSU-WP campus and enter into the Outreach program through Springfield. I am also hoping to gain a master’s degree in child and family development through that same program. Hopefully, after that I’ll find a job working with children and families in the community.
