“I think the supportive atmosphere on campus is my favorite thing about Missouri State-West Plains.”

Academic Program: Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology

Hometown: Cabool, Missouri

Why did you choose to attend Missouri State-West Plains?

Missouri State-West Plains is close to home and made commuting easier for me.

How would you describe your experience here?

The last two years have been a challenge for me, although they have given me a great opportunity to increase my knowledge and a new appreciation of time management. The writing and math tutoring labs have helped me improve my skills in those areas.

What has been your favorite thing about Missouri State-West Plains?

I think the supportive atmosphere on campus is my favorite thing about MSU-WP. Being a non-traditional student was a little concerning to me at first, but the students and staff members have made me feel right at home. The instructors have given me the encouragement and help I have needed to succeed.

What has been your favorite course?

I have enjoyed all my courses and have learned a lot. Some have been more of a challenge than others, but in the end, I was glad I had taken them. My top three are American Democracy and Citizenship, Legal and Ethical Aspects of Healthcare, and Diagnosis Coding, so far.

How have faculty and staff helped you during your time at Missouri State-West Plains?

The faculty and staff that I have been in contact with have all been extremely helpful and pleasant to interact with. The one instructor that has made the biggest difference for me is Mrs. Thora Broyles. She and the math tutoring lab staff gave me the extra guidance I need to pass my math courses.

How did you choose your major?

Medical Billing and Coding has been a career I have been interested in for several years, but never had the opportunity to pursue until I became unemployed. With the help of the WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) program, this dream is becoming a reality.

What have you learned from HIT Program that will help you succeed in your education, career or life?

Even though, this curriculum has been demanding it has help me to realize that it is never too late to further your education and achieve your dreams. You just need to keep pushing until you get through those tough weeks and there are those around that are willing to help, you simply need to ask.

What are your plans after graduation?

My plan is to secure employment with a clinic or hospital and be a part of the HIM profession and eventually be able to work from home.
