“So far, my experience has been pretty good. I have met more unique people than I did in my small hometown.”

Academic Program: Associate of Arts in General Studies

What is your hometown: Hartville, Missouri

Why did you choose to attend Missouri State-West Plains?

A+ Program acceptance, adjustment to living more independently, and it’s close to my hometown.

How would you describe your experience here?

So far, my experience has been pretty good. I have met more unique people than I did in my small hometown. I have been able to talk to people who have similar interests.

What has been your favorite thing about Missouri State-West Plains?

The (William and Virginia Darr) Honors Program has a been a unique experience, so far, and I do not regret joining it. It’s nice to think about ideas and issues on more than a surface level. Also, I enjoy talking with instructors.

What has been your favorite course?

My favorite course would be a tie between Alex Pinnon’s Honors 150 (Honors I Seminar) class and Dr. Jason McCollom’s History 122 (Survey of U.S. History Since 1877) class. Pinnon’s Honors 150 has philosophy which talks about the world on a deeper level. Dr. McCollom’s History 122 has McCollom as a charismatic lecturer and clear course material.

How have faculty and staff helped you during your time at Missouri State-West Plains?

The faculty and staff have helped me find items I needed, gave me information I needed, and continue to advise me.

How did you choose your major?

I wanted to seek a bachelor’s degree, so I wanted to complete a general studies degree that would transfer to MSU in Springfield. General studies may lack practicality compared to an associate of applied science (AAS) degree, but the general studies degree transfers easier into a bachelor’s degree.

What have you learned from the Honors Program that will help you succeed in your education, career or life?

The Honors Program has helped and continues to help develop my ability to understand issues and ideas on a deeper level than before.

What are your plans after graduation?

After I complete my two-year general studies degree here at MSU-WP, I plan to transfer to MSU in Springfield to complete a bachelor’s degree. I am not exactly sure what bachelor’s degree I should pursue, yet I am still confident my hard work will help achieve whatever goal I challenge myself to. These are my current plans, but they can be subject to change!
