Cell phones and digital cameras with video options have made it easier than ever for area residents to let their inner Steven Spielberg out and try their hand at making films.
And officials in Missouri State University-West Plains’ (MSU-WP) University/Community Programs (U/CP) Department want to highlight some of these creations during the first ever Southern Missouri Amateur Short Film Festival Nov. 30 at the West Plains Civic Center.
Officials invite aspiring filmmakers to create and submit a one- to three-minute short film to premier at the festival. Films can be either a comedy, drama or documentary, but they must be submitted by Nov. 15. The top film in each category will receive an award.
Share your story
“Films will be judged based on the story they tell, not the quality of production,” U/CP Theater and Events Coordinator Hannah Salvesen said. “We want to create an accessible event where each and every person with a story to tell can share it. If you have a story idea, don’t hesitate to get your creative juices flowing and submit it!”
Salvesen encourages area residents to make the process easier on themselves by making their creations simple, using materials and equipment they already own or can borrow.
“These films do not have to be fancy. They can be shot on phone cameras and edited using free apps or software like Windows or Apple Movie Maker,” she added.
How to enter
Full rules and entry information can be found in the discussion section of the Southern Missouri Amateur Short Film Festival Facebook event on the U/CP Facebook page or by emailing WPTheaterEvents@MissouriState.edu.
“This event is an exciting opportunity for all of us to play around with the concept of visual storytelling,” Salvesen said. “Everyone has a story to tell, and we want to see yours!”
See your film on the silver screen
The submitted films will be shown at the festival beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 30 at the civic center theater. Admission is free, and everyone is invited to attend. Filmmakers especially are encouraged to walk the red carpet with their family and friends.
“Film festivals are such a fun way to explore new stories and bond over old traditions, tall tales and seeing your friends and family on screen,” Salvesen said. “Don’t miss this fun-filled night!”
