Name: Grace Schierling
Academic Program: Associate of Science in Nursing
What is your hometown?
Mountain View, Missouri
Why did you choose to attend Missouri State-West Plains?
I chose MSU-West Plains because it was close to home, more affordable, and had the program for my major.
How would you describe your experience here?
I would say my experience at MSU-West Plains has been memorable and has been an incredible learning process. MSU-West Plains has allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and really take the challenges life throws and to put a positive and productive spin to it.
What has been your favorite thing about Missouri State-West Plains?
My favorite thing about MSU-West Plains is that it provides students with resources such as the Grizzly Math Tutoring Lab and Arch W. Shaw Writing Center which helps students who may be struggling in a specific area. The coaches in the labs are some of the nicest and most incredible people I have ever met and, for me, made college life more fun and achievable. Now as someone who has completed my required math courses, I still find myself stopping by the lab just to let them know how much I appreciate them.
What has been your favorite course?
My favorite course has been Human Anatomy with Dr. Wheeler just because of all the hands on learning we got to do in the lab identifying the structures of the human body.
How have faculty and staff helped you during your time at Missouri State-West Plains?
The faculty and staff have been incredible in terms of helping me pursue my dream. From answering the endless questions I have in class to scheduling specific times to meet with me to review certain material, they really go above and beyond to help you achieve your goals.
How did you choose your major?
I chose my major based on my interest in medicine. At first, I was not sure if nursing was the route I wanted to go, but as a first semester nursing student, I really enjoy all my classes and believe this is the path meant for me.
What have you learned from nursing department that will help you succeed in your education, career or life?
The nursing department has taught me the value of coming prepared to class and staying organized and avoiding procrastination.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduating here, I hope to transfer to Missouri State-Springfield to complete my Bachelor of Science in Nursing while hopefully working part time in an ICU or Emergency Room.
