“I’ve learned it’s never too late to learn something new.”
Name: Yvonne Bowers
Academic Program: Associate of Applied Science in Technology-Advanced Industrial Maintenance Option
What is your hometown? Caulfield, Mo
Why did you choose to attend Missouri State-West Plains?
I chose Missouri State-West Plains for a couple of reasons. The first reason is because of its location. I live in Caulfield, so it is only about 20 miles from my house. The second reason is I took some classes in 2016 at the GOCAT (before it was called the GOCAT), and I found I could really learn from the instructors there.
How would you describe your experience here?
I would have to say the experience has been challenging. I graduated from high school in 1982, so it has been a minute or two since I have had to do math, English and history. I feel a sense of accomplishment, though, every time I jump over the next hurtle.
What has been your favorite thing about Missouri State-West Plains?
My favorite thing has been the enthusiasm of the instructors and the staff. I know that sounds odd to say, but I can see the dedication of the faculty and staff in making sure each student meets the goals they’ve set for themselves, and maybe see a future for themselves they did not see before.
What has been your favorite course?
I did not expect it to be, but history has been my favorite course so far. I was surprised at how little I knew about the history of my own nation. I looked forward to each chapter.
How have faculty and staff helped you during your time at Missouri State-West Plains?
I have found the faculty and staff to be very helpful. I have had more than one instructor come along side me and help me when I had questions or difficulties, and the staff and instructors at the GOCAT building have gone to bat for me to have the courses made available to me to get my certificate in Advanced Welding and Fabrication in addition to the courses required for my major.
How did you choose your major?
I worked at Regal Beloit Corporation, a motor manufacturing company, for more than 20 years in maintenance, and it seemed like the logical next step to get an Associate of Applied Science in Advanced Industrial Maintenance. Basically, my plan is to take my experience and build on it.
What have you learned from Missouri State-West Plains that will help you succeed in your education, career or life?
I have learned it is never too late to learn something new, I have learned tenacity pays off, and I have learned never give up on your dream. I have wanted to go to college since I graduated from high school, and life got in the way. Now, I am fulfilling that dream.
What are your plans after graduation?
I have not decided for sure what I will do when I graduate. I am thinking about opening a small welding shop. I am keeping my options open. I just want to be ready for what life brings me.
