Name: Wyatt Reid
Academic Program: Associate of Science Nursing
What is your hometown? West Plains, MO
Why did you choose to attend Missouri State-West Plains?
I wanted to further my education without the burden of leaving the vicinity of my hometown and my family.
How would you describe your experience here?
Thus far, I have had a great experience. There have been some challenging days, but they are always worth it when you realize what you took away from those periods.
What has been your favorite thing about Missouri State-West Plains?
My favorite thing about MSU-West Plains is that it just seems like a quality environment to learn in. High caliber instructors and students all seem like they make it a mission to effectively pass and receive knowledge and information. The labs and classrooms are available and oriented in a manner that greatly facilitates education.
What has been your favorite course? And why?
My favorite course this far has been NUR 101 (Adult Medical-Surgical Nursing 1). I think this is my favorite course because it was the first opportunity that I was able to be involved with a tangible healthcare environment, helping people and making my community a healthier place to live.
How have faculty and staff helped you during your time at Missouri State-West Plains?
The instructors in the nursing program are knowledgeable, experienced and really seem to care about students retaining the skills and information they pass along. They seem to always make themselves available, offering their time outside of the classroom to sit down with a student if he or she needs it.
How did you choose your major?
In 2018 I was deployed to the middle east and attached to a Mass Casualty Evacuation Team with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit. My role on this team was to provide security in the field for doctors and medics. After seeing some of the skills that these individuals possessed, I knew I wanted to be involved in healthcare. As soon as my enlistment in the Marine Corps ended, I enrolled in classes at MSU-West Plains.
What have you learned from nursing department that will help you succeed in your education, career or life?
I have already learned, and hopefully will continue to build upon, skills that will help make my community a better, healthier place to live.
What are your plans after graduation?
Although I’m not entirely sure of specifically where or what I want to do, I have plans on using the skills I acquire in the nursing program to work in emergency medicine.
