2023 June 13 by University Communications

Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) will offer its annual Summer Scholars Academy July 17-20.

The academy is for students entering fifth grade through those who have just completed eighth grade, organizers said. It will meet from 8:30 a.m. to noon each day.

What you’ll do

Students will attend two courses each day. First course choices include:

  • a theater class taught by Dr. Gary Phillips, professor of communications, in which students will write and perform a play
  • biology presentations by Dr. Ben Wheeler, associate professor of biomedical sciences and biology, and Ana Estrella, assistant professor of biology and biomedical sciences, during which students will learn about biological systems, including those here in the Ozarks

Second course choices include:

  • math activities presented by Jerry Trick, associate professor of mathematics, and Melinda Denton, assistant professor of mathematics
  • computer science activities presented by Jacob Poulette, assistant professor of computer graphics and programming

Most of the courses will be very hands-on and designed for students interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

On the last day of the academy, students will have the opportunity to visit with members of the Grizzly eSports team, nursing students and students in MSU-WP’s technology programs, organizers said.

Registration information

Registration is now underway and will end July 10. The cost is $50 per student.

Seating is limited, so organizers encourage those interested to register early.

Those who register will receive a packet of information containing program information, including class locations, organizers said.

For more information, including how to register, contact Jerry Trick at 417-255-7292 or JerryTrick@MissouriState.edu.
