“It has been more stressful this year, but the faculty have helped me tremendously. Every professor is so kind and understanding.”
Name: Kylan Hall
Academic Program: Associate of Arts in Teaching
What is your hometown? West Plains, MO
Why did you choose to attend Missouri State-West Plains?
I chose MSU-WP so that I could stay close to my family, and with MSU-Springfield’s Outreach Rrogram I will be able to stay here until I get my bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
How would you describe your experience here?
I have really enjoyed my time here. I have met so many people, not just through the classes I’m in, but as a tutor at the Math and Science Center. This year has been more challenging than my freshman year because I also began teaching part time at Ozark Christian Academy. It has been more stressful this year, but the faculty have helped me tremendously. Every professor is so kind and understanding. If I miss an assignment or haven’t seemed like myself, they always ask if everything is alright.
What has been your favorite thing about Missouri State-West Plains?
My favorite thing is my amazing coworkers. (Yes, one of them told me to say that.) Honestly, they are so amazing, and we have shared a lot of fun moments together.
What has been your favorite course and why?
History with Dr. Jason McCollum was my favorite. The course was so engaging. The lectures weren’t dry or boring, but they brought history to life. I even enjoyed the discussions that we had, and I am an introvert who does not like talking in class.
How have faculty and staff helped you during your time at Missouri State-West Plains?
When I found out I would be teaching part time, I knew that I would not be able to handle 15 credit hours with two jobs. So, I reached out to ReBena Atkinson, and she set up a schedule of courses for me to take that would fit my lifestyle for every semester until I graduate with my bachelor’s. She also helped me to formally change my degree from the Associate of Arts in General Studies to the Associate of Arts in Teaching. She has been such a blessing.
How did you choose your major?
I always said I was never going to be a teacher after seeing my sisters become teachers and the work load they deal with on a regular basis. However, I always knew I wanted to work with kids, and while I was tutoring as part of my A+ Program requirements, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher.
What have you learned at Missouri State-West Plains that will help you succeed in your education, career or life?
I have learned to how break down and present content in many different ways to help students understand the material.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduating, I plan on remaining in West Plains and working in one of the rural schools.
