After more than three decades of dedicated service to Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP), Chancellor Dr. Dennis Lancaster has announced his retirement, effective July 1, 2025.

Lancaster’s career at MSU-WP has spanned multiple roles, each contributing to the growth and success of the campus. He first joined the university in 1990 as a per-course English and journalism instructor and was hired full-time in 1992 as assistant director of university communications and lecturer. Over the years, he served as special projects coordinator, assistant to the chancellor, and assistant professor while also directing the Darr Honors Program. Lancaster served as dean of academic affairs for eight years before being named interim chancellor in July 2020. He was officially appointed as chancellor in 2022.

“Serving as chancellor of Missouri State University-West Plains has been one of the greatest honors of my career,” Lancaster said. “I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together—expanding opportunities for students, strengthening community partnerships, and enhancing the campus experience. My nearly 33 years has seen so much growth and development of our campus and our community. I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity or job family.”

During his tenure as chancellor, Lancaster played a pivotal role in advancing MSU-WP through numerous initiatives and developments. Under his leadership, the university introduced several new academic and student support programs, including the Terry L. “Bo” Pace Welding Program, the TJ Swift House ASCEND program, and the addition of a music program. Campus facilities saw significant enhancements, including the establishment of the Pace Industrial Science Center, the Gammill Simulation Lab, Fowler Lecture Hall, the Ozark Heritage Research Center, the Neurodiversity and Autism Center, the International Commons, and the John W. Phillips Grizzly Lofts. Additionally, the university expanded Grizzly athletics with the additions of Grizzly Esports, Grizzly Softball, Grizzly Baseball, and Grizzly Rodeo.

Dr. Richard “Biff” Williams, president of the Missouri State University System, praised Lancaster’s leadership and commitment to higher education.

“Dr. Lancaster’s impact on Missouri State University-West Plains is immeasurable,” Williams said. “His passion for student success, innovative approach to academic programming, and deep commitment to the community have shaped this campus into the thriving institution it is today. His leadership will be greatly missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of students and educators.”

Lancaster earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Philosophy from Drury University, a master’s degree from the University of Missouri, and a doctorate in higher education leadership from Lindenwood University. Throughout his career, he has been a champion for academic excellence, student engagement, and community partnerships.

“While I look forward to the next chapter in my life, my heart will always be with Missouri State-West Plains,” Lancaster added. “This university plays a vital role in the region, and I am confident it will continue to grow and thrive in the years ahead.”

As MSU-WP prepares for this transition, details regarding the search for a new chancellor will be announced in the coming months.
