Officials at Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) announced today that Dr. Jason McCollom, associate professor of history at MSU-WP, has been honored with the 2025 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The award was presented on April 2 by officials with the Council on Public Higher Education (COPHE) during a ceremony in Jefferson City recognizing outstanding educators from Missouri’s public colleges and universities.

The annual award celebrates faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching, innovation in course design and delivery, student advising, service to their institutions, and a commitment to academic success.

More about McCollom

McCollom, who has taught for 15 years, including the past 10 at MSU-WP, was selected by a committee of his peers based on input from students and faculty.

“Dr. McCollom exemplifies the highest standards of teaching and scholarship,” said Dr. Michael Orf, vice chancellor of academic affairs. “His passion for history, his commitment to his students, and his service to the university community make him a truly deserving recipient of this award.”

A student who nominated Dr. McCollom praised his ability to engage the classroom. “He makes his lessons come alive, and I’ve never met a student who did not like him,” the student said. “He is kind, remembers his students, and is generous in his praise when they do well.”

Beyond the classroom, Dr. McCollom serves as department chair and is actively involved in preserving Ozarks history. He is a member of the steering committee for the Ozarks Heritage Research Center and played a key role in shaping its vision and mission.

Additionally, he directs the Ozarks Symposium, an annual gathering of scholars and community members dedicated to regional history.

“Dr. McCollom’s impact reaches beyond the university,” said MSU-WP Chancellor Dr. Dennis Lancaster. “His leadership in historical research and community engagement strengthens both our institution and the region. We are fortunate to have him as part of our faculty.”

Dr. McCollom was formally recognized alongside other award recipients from Missouri’s public institutions at the April 2 ceremony.
