Officials at Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) proudly conferred an Honorary Associate of Arts in General Studies degree upon Crockett W. Oaks Jr. during its 2025 Commencement Ceremony Saturday, May 10, at the West Plains Civic Center.

A lifelong resident of West Plains, Oaks was recognized for his extraordinary record of service to his community, state and country. His legacy spans military service, public service, family support, historical preservation and a lifelong commitment to education.

“Mr. Oaks represents the very best of what it means to serve selflessly and lead with integrity,” said Dr. Dennis Lancaster, MSU-WP chancellor. “His story is one of perseverance, duty and a deep belief in the power of education. It is only fitting that we honor him with a degree that reflects the journey he began decades ago.”

More about Oaks

Born in 1946, Oaks began his educational journey at the historic Lincoln School, a one-room schoolhouse during the segregation era, before graduating from West Plains High School in 1965. He attended what was then the Residence Center of Southwest Missouri State University before being drafted into the U.S. Army. From 1966 to 1968, he served in Germany as a civil affairs soldier, helping strengthen German-American relations during a pivotal time in history.

Following active-duty service, Oaks returned to West Plains and built a distinguished career with the Missouri Department of Transportation, retiring after 28 years. He also served with the Missouri National Guard for 24 years, including deployments to Iraq during Operation Enduring Freedom and peacekeeping and disaster relief missions across the globe.

“Through every chapter of his life, Mr. Oaks has demonstrated unwavering strength, quiet leadership, and a fierce commitment to community,” Lancaster said. “And while life may have interrupted his original educational plans, today we celebrate the completion of that journey and the countless lives he’s influenced along the way.”

A passion for education

Oaks’ passion for education continued through his family. Together with his wife of 55 years, Juanita, he supported the academic pursuits of his children and granddaughter, all of whom completed college degrees, many through Missouri State University.

An active member of Washington Street Church of Christ, Oaks also is a respected community historian. He is often called upon by university officials, civic leaders and community members to share his lived experiences, particularly those regarding local history. As the sole alumni representative of the Lincoln School, he remains a steadfast advocate for remembering and honoring the stories of that era.

MSU-WP officials are proud to recognize Crockett W. Oaks Jr. as the 2025 honorary degree recipient, celebrating a life dedicated to service, education and legacy.
