Eighteen students participated in Missouri State University-West Plains’ (MSU-WP) Summer Scholars Academy for high schoolers June 9-11.

The students participated in several STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) activities, including plant propagation, painting, jazz and music theory, veterinary technology, theater, game development, healthcare, poetry, and math and statistics, and they competed in a variety of STEAM-related games.

At the end of the session, participants received a certificate of completion, goodie bag and camp T-shirt.

This was the first year MSU-WP hosted an academy for high school students and Trevor Cressman, director of the university’s Workforce Development and Community Education office, said they were pleased with the results. He noted the students came from West Plains, Thayer, Cabool, Pomona, Couch, Gatewood, Salem, Alton, St. Robert, Elk Creek, Mountain View and Dora.

“We fully expect the event to grow in the years to come,” he said.

The Summer Scholars Academy for middle school students, which has been held for several years, took place June 23-27.
