The university will begin offering a choir class this spring, as well as a University/Community Choir.

2025 November 21 by University Communications

Interested students and community members who have participated in choir will have a new educational opportunity at Missouri State University–West Plains (MSU-WP)

The university will begin offering a choir class this spring, as well as a University/Community Choir. The class, MUS 162 Choral Union, will be offered for one credit from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays in Putnam Hall. It will also be open to community members and nondegree-seeking students.

“Establishing a collegiate music program at Missouri State University–West Plains has long been a dream of mine. Our community and the greater south-central Missouri region deserve access to high-quality music education,” said Rocky Long, director of music. “Adding vocal music to our offerings will strengthen the program and allow us to introduce additional ensembles, enriching opportunities for students and the community alike.”

Local educator will lead the program

University officials have hired Jordan Hall as the instructor for the choir class, and he will lead the University/Community Choir.

“Mr. Hall is an exceptional musician and leader who brings extensive experience from public school music programs, church choirs and community theater productions. His energy and passion for music education will be instrumental in establishing a vibrant vocal music program at Missouri State University–West Plains,” Long said.

Hall has been involved in musical direction throughout his career. He currently serves as the music teacher at Fairview Middle School. Previously, he was the assistant choir director at West Plains High School and the choir director at a local Methodist church. His family has deep roots in the music scene in the West Plains School District; his father, David, taught choir at West Plains Middle School for more than 25 years.

“I’m honored to lead the Missouri State University–West Plains Community Choir and to support the expansion of the music program,” said Jordan Hall. “My hope is that the choir becomes a dynamic creative outlet for both our students and the broader community.”

Hall’s first day will be Jan. 12.

More about the music program at MSU-WP

MSU-WP’s music program offers University/Community Band, Jazz Band and a Choir. These programs are traditional concert and choir ensembles whose membership includes MSU-WP students, high school students, community members and music educators. They perform two concerts per semester and rehearse from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays in Putnam Hall when classes are in session. Members can earn college credit for participating if they are registered for the course.
