Area middle school students are invited to participate in the Grizzly Esports Ursa Minor Summer Camp, set for June 16 –18 on the campus of Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP).
The camp is hosted by Grizzly Esports coaching staff Nickales Lawson, head coach, and Spencer Spreutels, assistant coach, with support from additional staff and current players, offering campers a unique opportunity to learn, compete and experience collegiate esports firsthand.
“The future of esports belongs to those who can think beyond the controller. Skill wins matches, but structure builds careers,” said Spreutels.
Camp Details
Students will develop skills in both gameplay and the broader esports industry.
Through game titles Fortnite and Mario Kart, students will learn game strategy and teamwork development. Additionally, students will be introduced to esports and career pathways, learn shout casting techniques and streaming fundamentals, as well as logo design and brand building.
Campers will spend the first two days learning and practicing before competing in a final-day tournament for rewards. Participants will also have opportunities to co-cast alongside coaches, gaining hands-on experience in esports broadcasting.
“Our mission is to highlight the full scope of the esports ecosystem. This camp is intentionally designed and led by experienced professionals who understand both the competitive and developmental sides of esports. We’re building leaders,” added Lawson.
New Overnight Experience
New this year, Ursa Minor will be held in a supervised overnight format, allowing campers to stay on campus and experience college life.
Under consistent supervision, campers will stay in campus housing, receive three meals per day, participate in evening activities and supervised downtime.
“Ursa Minor integrates structured physical activity into the program,” said Lawson. Morning sessions will include physical activities such as capture-the-flag and dodgeball, followed by structured classroom and gaming blocks throughout the day. Lawson explained, “These sessions are designed to give campers a necessary mental reset while reinforcing the importance of balance and discipline. Through these activities, campers will continue to build team cohesion, communication, and strategic thinking, but in a different environment.”
Camp Costs and Registration
The cost to attend the Ursa Minor Summer Camp is $180 per student, which includes overnight lodging, three meals per day and an official camp jersey.
Space is limited to 20 participants, and pre-registration is required to ensure apparel availability.
