Celebrate the sounds of summer June 5 with MSU-WP band

Area musicians invited to join for the performance.

2025 May 27 by University Communications

Celebrate the sounds of summer during a June 5 performance by the Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) University/Community Band.

The band will perform at 6:30 p.m. on Court Square in downtown West Plains as part of the monthly Downtown Stroll. The concert is free; however, community members will need to bring their own seating, university officials said.

Those who attend can expect to hear a variety of marches, patriotic songs, popular tunes and movie themes, among others, according to Director of Music Rocky Long.

Call for musicians

Long said the June 5 concert would be a perfect time for area musicians who would like to join a band and play music again to join the University/Community Band. “It’s a fun, low-commitment opportunity – just five hours total – to make music and connect with great people from all over south-central Missouri and northern Arkansas,” he explained.

Those who would like to join should email RockyLong@MissouriState.edu.

More about MSU-WP’s Music Program

The University/Community Band is a traditional concert band ensemble whose membership includes MSU-WP students, high school students, community members and music educators. The band performs two concerts per semester and rehearses from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays at Putnam Hall on the MSU-WP campus when classes are in session. Members can earn college credit for playing in the group if they are registered for the course.

In addition to the University/Community Band, MSU-WP’s Music Program offers a jazz ensemble, pep band, small ensembles and private lessons.
