Officials at Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) proudly conferred an Honorary Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice degree upon (Ret.) Sgt. Lionel Daugherty during its 2026 Commencement Ceremony Saturday, May 9, at the West Plains Civic Center.

The honorary degree is one of the highest recognitions bestowed by the university and honors individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving others, distinguished themselves through their work and embody the values of two-year institutions.

Daugherty served 30 years with Troop G of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, with assignments in Thayer, Gainesville and Willow Springs. Throughout his career, he earned a reputation as a respected public servant known for his strong community presence, support of local businesses and consistent engagement at events across the region.

Following his retirement from the patrol, Daugherty continued his service to the region as a police dispatcher for the Ava Police Department.

His commitment to public safety and service was recognized with the Red Cross Merit Recognition award for saving a life.

In addition to his professional career, Daugherty has remained involved in his community. He served as a deacon at the Gainesville Church of Christ and contributed to the upkeep and improvement of the Ava Country Club golf course. He also supports current and retired law enforcement officers by hosting regular gatherings that foster connection and camaraderie.

Despite personal challenges, including the loss of his wife in 1982, Daugherty raised two daughters while emphasizing the importance of education and service. Both went on to careers in education, including one who is a Fulbright Scholar and another who serves as a college president.

“Sgt. Daugherty represents the very best of public service and community leadership,” said MSU-WP Chancellor Zora Mulligan. “His commitment to others, leadership and the power of education reflect the values of Missouri State-West Plains.”
