“Everyone that I’ve encountered has been so helpful in so many different ways throughout my time here.”

2026 June 30 by University Communications

Name: Lydia Barton

Academic Program: Associate of Science in Business

Hometown: West Plains, Missouri

Why did you choose to attend Missouri State-West Plains?

Since I live in West Plains, Missouri State-West Plains was the best option for me to continue my education while staying close to home. It has truly been a blessing!

Why did you choose your program of study?

I chose Business because I’m still exploring what I want to do for my career. The program provides a wide range of opportunities and allows me to keep my options open. It also offers valuable knowledge and skills that I can apply no matter where my future takes me.

What has been your favorite course and why?

My favorite class so far has been Honors 150. We read a lot of interesting material that I probably wouldn’t have encountered otherwise. Being in the Honors Program has also opened the door to many opportunities, including volunteering, presenting at the Student Symposium, and studying abroad in China this fall.

Is there a faculty member who has made a significant impact on your college experience?

There are several! Everyone I’ve encountered has been incredibly helpful and supportive throughout my time here. A few faculty members who have made a significant impact are Jennifer Edgeller, Alex Pinnon, and Melinda Denton.

What clubs, organizations, or activities are you involved in?

I’m involved in the Honors Program and Christian Campus House.

What has been your most memorable college moment so far?

It’s hard to choose just one because there have been so many special moments. If I had to pick, I’d say finding out that I would be spending the fall semester studying in China.

What challenges have you overcome so far in college?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve overcome is self-doubt. When I first started college, I was afraid of failing and worried that I wouldn’t be able to handle the workload. Since then, I’ve proven myself wrong. If the version of me from a year ago could see where I am today, she would be amazed by how much I’ve accomplished.

What is your favorite place on campus?

I love spending time in the Tutoring Center. I’m there often working on homework, studying, and catching up with friends.

What is one fun fact about yourself?

I worked as a barista for three years. It has always been my dream to travel to Italy to experience the culture and, of course, try the coffee!

What are your plans after MSU-WP?

After MSU-WP, I plan to attend either Missouri State University in Springfield or the University of Missouri to earn a bachelor’s degree in Business or Political Science while continuing to explore different career paths. I’m also considering law school afterward if I’m not quite ready to be done with school. For now, I’m taking my journey one step at a time and staying open to wherever it may lead.
