Walls Engraved Pottery presentation by Toney Aid scheduled for Sept. 15 at OHRC

Aid will discuss a wide range of engraved pottery, the images on them and why it is important to study them.

2026 September 1 by University Communications

Officials with the Ozarks Heritage Research Center (OHRC) at Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) will host a presentation titled, “Walls Engraved Pottery” at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at OHRC, located inside MSU-WP’s Garnett Library, 304 W. Trish Knight St., in West Plains. The presentation will be given by Toney Aid.

Free and open to all, this event is sponsored by the OHRC and West Plains Council on the Arts . Refreshments will be provided.

Aid will discuss how he assembled information on all known examples of Walls Engraved pottery, which was made by Indigenous people living in the Missouri bootheel and northeast Arkansas during Mississippian times, 1200-1700 A.D. Additionally, Aid will discuss a wide range of engraved pottery, the images on them and why it is important to study them. They introduce us to the way Mississippian people viewed their world, ideas that are important for everyone in today’s world.

More about Aid

Toney Aid received a master’s degree in art history in 1973 from the University of Missouri. In 1990, his friend Roy Hathcock, a member of the Cherokee Tribe who had published two volumes on Native American pottery, encouraged Toney to research pottery made during the Mississippian period, 1200-1700 A.D. Aid’s library now holds over a thousand volumes and two thousand journals. He has published several articles on the subject including his recent book, “Walls Engraved Pottery”.
