WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Everyone is invited to attend Missouri State University-West Plains’ third annual Backyard Movie Night featuring a free showing of the 1993 feature film “The Sandlot” on Thursday, July 25, in the grass on the north side of the Lybyer Technology Center off Cass Avenue.
The event is co-sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA) and the University/Community Programs (U/CP) Department.
“I am really looking forward to Backyard Movie Night,” said SGA President Dakota Bates. “‘The Sandlot’ is one of my favorite films, and I think it’s a film that will attract a large audience.”
Directed by David M. Evans, the film tells the story of Scotty Smalls (played by Tom Guiry), who moves into a new neighborhood and decides to play baseball as a way to fit in with the other kids. He’s taken under the wing of local baseball guru Rodriquez (Mike Vitar) and soon becomes part of the local team. The group embarks on a host of adventures involving their favorite sport, sleep-overs in a treehouse, the pretty lifeguard at the local pool, their arch rival baseball team, and a traveling fair.
And, when Scotty accidentally hits a baseball signed by Babe Ruth over the fence at the back of the sandlot, he learns to face his fears when he retrieves it from the legendary ball-eating dog, The Beast – a feat no one has ever done before – and becomes a legend in his own right.
“This is the third year for Backyard Movie Night, and it keeps growing more popular every year,” said U/CP Theater and Events Coordinator Emily Gibson. “This is a great opportunity for students and the community to get out after the temperature cools off and enjoy some high quality, free entertainment for the evening.”
Rogers Taylor, coordinator of student life and development at Missouri State-West Plains, agreed. “I look forward to Backyard Movie Night each summer. It’s a great time to spend with friends and family,” he said.
The movie, rated PG, will begin at dark, about 9:15 p.m., and those planning to attend should bring a blanket or lawn chairs. Snacks will be served. For more information, call the U/CP office, 417-255-7966.
