Missouri State-West Plains now a Pearson VUE test site

    WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Missouri State University-West Plains has entered into an agreement with Pearson VUE to provide computer-based testing for a variety of certifications through the university’s testing center in the Advising and Academic Coaching Center for Empowering Student Success (AACCESS). Students attend MCTM conference; Trick appointed contest director

THESE STUDENTS at Missouri State University-West Plains attended the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) Dec. 5 and 6 in Columbia, Mo. Accompanied by Assistant Professor of Mathematics Jerry Trick, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Melinda Denton, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Michelle Kwon and Math Specialist Thora Broyles, the group attended various presentations throughout the weekend. In addition, Trick was appointed MCTM Elementary Contest Director. Accommodations for the students were made possible with generous donations to the Math Department, including those made by the Philanthropic Women for Education. Student veterans demonstrate flag folding technique to elementary students

MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY-West Plains students William Hatcher, left, West Plains, and Greg Phipps, Willow Springs, both of whom are veterans of the armed services, demonstrate how to properly fold the United States flag as part of a community service project for Connie Yates’ College Reading and Study Skills (IDS 150) class on Veterans Day Nov. 11. The veterans conducted the demonstration to members of Sylvia Hershenson’s third grade class at West Plains Elementary School during a visit to the Garnett Library. Hatcher and Phipps discussed the importance of Veterans Day and answered questions from the students. Following the demonstration, the students attended the annual Veterans Day Parade. Hatcher was a Sergeant E5 in Alpha Troop of the 710th Cavalry in the U.S. Army 4th Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade at Fort Hood, Texas, at the time of his discharge. Phipps was a Corporal in the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejune in Jacksonville, N.C., at the time of his discharge. (Missouri State-West Plains Photo)

College students read to 3rd graders to encourage reading, learning

BRITTANY ALLEN, West Plains, a student in Connie Yates’ College Reading and Study Skills (IDS 150) class at Missouri State University-West Plains, reads to a couple of students in Sylvia Hershenson’s third grade class at West Plains Elementary School as part of a service learning project designed to encourage reading and learning among elementary students. The students visited the Garnett Library to become familiar with the library’s services and resources, which are available to the public. Yates pointed out elementary students who are encouraged to read and who are exposed to the college environment are more likely to finish high school, attend college and succeed in a career. The visit took place on Veterans Day Nov. 11. Allen served as a Senior Airman E4 with the U.S. Air Force. (Missouri State-West Plains Photo)

Grizzlies get back on the winning track with 74-42 win over Independence

    WEST PLAINS, Mo. – The Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly Basketball team got back on the winning track Tuesday night with a 74-42 victory over Independence (Kansas) Community College in Joe Paul Evans Arena at the West Plains Civic Center.
