Over $400,000 worth of labor went into Operation 50K

2014 May 30 by wpadmin

A TOTAL OF $423,982 worth of labor went into Missouri State University-West Plains’ Operation 50K community service initiative this past year, and Chancellor Drew Bennett recently presented a ceremonial check in that amount to West Plains City Council members. At the university’s commencement May 17, Bennett reported a total of 56,531 hours of community service had been contributed by faculty, staff, students, alumni and others with ties to the university over the past year as part of the university’s 50th anniversary celebration. The final tally, he added, was 10 percent above the 50,000-hour goal. When the hours are calculated at minimum wage, Operation 50K participants gave $423,982 worth of labor to the community through such causes as the Adopt-A-Street program, Boy Scout troops, the West Plains Area Boys and Girls Club, Christos House, 4H programs, Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, among others. On hand for the presentation were, from left, West Plains City Council members Bob Burtrum and Brenda Smith, Mayor Jack Pahlmann, Bennett, and Councilmen Mike Topliff and Royce Fugate. University just 2,000 hours shy of Operation 50K goal

2014 April 4 by wpadmin

THANKS TO CONTINUED VOLUNTEER activites such as trash collection by Student Ambassadors along Trish Knight Street in West Plains, Missouri State University-West Plains is just 2,000 hours shy of its goal for Operation 50K. The year-long community service initiative began following 2013 commencement ceremonies as a way to honor the campus’ 50th anniversary. For the past 10 months, faculty, staff, students and those with ties to the university have been recording their volunteer hours online. Ambassadors spent an hour cleaning the street on this particular day, university officials said. That hour has added up throughout the year for the Ambassadors, who pick up trash once a week during fall and spring semesters and every other week during the summer session, officials added. University officials encourage eligible volunteers to continue recording their hours so that the 50,000-hour goal can be met by commencement May 17. 2014 March 25 by wpadmin

AN ESTIMATED 40 VOLUNTEER hours recorded in February by TRiO students in support of the Southern Missouri Homebuilders Association’s annual playhouse giveaway has helped Missouri State University-West Plains reach 90 percent of its goal for Operation 50K. The year-long community service initiative began following 2013 commencement ceremonies as a way to honor the campus’ 50th anniversary. For the past 10 months, faculty, staff, students and those with ties to the university have been recording their volunteer hours online, and as of Monday afternoon, over 45,000 hours of service have been reported. TRiO students spent an estimated 20 hours painting the playhouse on Feb. 15 and another 20 hours working the homebuilders association’s annual Home and Garden Show March 1 and 2 at the West Plains Civic Center. The playhouse is being given away to raise funds for West Plains Area Habitat for Humanity. University officials encourage eligible volunteers to continue recording their hours so that the 50,000-hour goal can be met by commencement in May.
